1 year not enough time for constitutional review consultations– Hon Malone

Opposition Member in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has raised concerns over the reported short consultation period for the constitutional review in the Virgin Islands.

This comes as the Constitutional Review Commission in the Virgin Islands (VI) has set-up office and has launched public consultations from November 1, 2022, following expressions of interest in meeting with the Commission.

Calling on persons to get together and meet with the Commission, Hon Malone while speaking as a guest on the Honestly Speaking show of Tuesday, November 8, 2022, said it is important that persons meet with the Commission now rather than waiting until the last minute.

“It is going to be critical. This body was given one year…. It is being felt widely that this is not going to be enough time to properly conduct the affairs of the review of the Constitution of the Virgin Islands."

“So it is critical that, whatever time it is, we don't wait until the very last minute in order to get this done,” he added.

Members of the newly appointed Constitutional Review Commission gather to discuss the draft Terms of Reference.

Persons encouraged to submit comments

Meanwhile, a notice from the Commission has encouraged the public to submit any written comments via the comments tool also on the Commission’s website, www.yourconstitution.vg. which will ensure that comments are captured and recorded fully and accurately.

Hon Malone added that persons, even in groups of 40 can also meet with the Commission at their location, for those who are interested in group sessions.

Further, Hon Malone revealed that there was recently a brief meeting with the House of Assembly members for an overview of the process that will be taking place as part of the review.

He added that the HoA has been able to agree on an official public launch of the Commission, which is one that will provide more information on how persons can make a difference in the VI through the constitutional review process.

Meanwhile, the Constitutional Review Commission has advised it will be hosting a community meeting at West End Community Center today, Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at 6:00 pm.

Unconfirmed reports are that the meeting will not be live-streamed.
