2 sets of COVID-19 vaccines on way to VI- Hon Malone

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) has confirmed that COVID-19 vaccines will be in the Virgin Islands (BVI) towards the end of January 2021 or early February.

Hon Malone made that revelation yesterday December 15, 2020, while a guest of the Honestly Speaking show on ZBVI 780 AM.

“The fact is that the UK has graciously made an offer through the Governor’s Office for us to have our set of vaccines, I think it’s the Pfizer one. That is the one that has the subzero and the particular temperature control,” Hon Malone told show host Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline.

According to the Health Minister, at least two other Caribbean Overseas Territories (OTs) will be rolling out the vaccination processes come the start of January; however, the VI is a bit behind.

“We got the notice out; we have the assurance that our supply will be flown in.”

Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Carvin Malone (AL), the Virgin Islands sourced COVID-19 vaccines from the United Kingdom and Caribbean Public Health Agency.

More vaccines sourced

Hon Malone said he was not equipped at the time with an exact date for the arrival of the vaccines, “And we have another supply through CARPHA [Caribbean Public Health Agency] and through the regional body. So we have two sources of vaccinations that we would have already paid for.”

He explained that the UK has allotted the first batch of vaccine. “What I do know off hand is that we have looked in terms of between 75 to 100 thousand units of the other kit.”

Hon Malone promised further details will be released in the very near future as it relates to the plan for the distribution of the vaccines.

Meanwhile, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has previously said the taking of COVID-19 vaccines will be optional.
