Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands, His Excellency David D. Archer Jr has given assent to the 2021 National Budget which is to the tune of $402,123,046.

The budget was passed on December 14, 2020, following a day-long debate in the House of Assembly (HoA), which according to Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) said was “committed to God for assent.”

The confirmation for the assent of the 2021 Budget was given via the Official Gazette issued today, December 24, 2020, which states that the budget will come into effect on January 1, 2021.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) highlighted that it was the third budget passed in the House of Assembly in 22 months by the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government, noting that the last two were passed within the time frame.

Leading on innovation

The budget, which is the third since the Premier Fahie led Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government took office in 2019, was held under the theme, “INNOVATION: Building a stable, diverse, competitive economy with strong industries and partnerships for regional and international trade, by building and harnessing the creative capacity of our human capital.”

Notably, the Bill was voted for by seven members who were present in the House of Assembly, including Opposition Legislator Hon, Julian Fraser RA (R3).

Outgoing Governor, His Excellency Augustus J.U. Jaspert is currently out of the territory until January 7, 2021, during which time, Mr Archer Jr. will act in the capacity of Governor.
