7.2 Percent of U.S. Adults Identify as LGBT

A new Gallup poll has found that 7.2% of U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). This is up from 3.5% in 2012, when Gallup first began tracking LGBT identification.
The poll, which surveyed over 10,000 adults nationwide, found that the increase in LGBT identification is largely being driven by younger generations. Nearly 20% of Generation Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) identify as LGBT, compared to 11.2% of millennials (those born between 1981 and 1996) and 3.3% of Generation X (those born between 1965 and 1980).

The poll also found that LGBT adults are more likely to be female, non-white, and college-educated. They are also more likely to live in urban areas and to identify as Democrats or independents.
