A Modern Mountain Home Filled with Eastern Design Principles

A Modern Mountain Home Filled with Eastern Design Principles

This design-build project in the Vail Valley, CO includes everything from architectural concepts to the entire build and construction process, along with all aspects of interior design.

The “Windy Hill” house was built with Vaastu Shastra and Feng Shui principles in mind. Enveloped by expansive vistas, the home incorporates vast windows that capture an unparalleled 360-degree view of the home’s natural surroundings. By utilizing meticulous architecture and design skills, this home was made to be one with its captivating environment.

Expansive views are the centerpiece of this home’s interior. With minimalism in mind, we used natural and subdued tones in the design process, which allows the home to rest in complete harmony with its natural environment. By incorporating large floor-to-ceiling windows and doors, the interior brings the outdoors in by creating a seamless indoor/outdoor transition throughout the home, while accentuating the breathtaking views every step of the way.

With our client’s vision in mind, we intentionally designed Windy Hill to incorporate both Vaastu Shastra and Feng Shui traditions. Vaastu Shastra considers a house to be a living soul, while Feng Shui incorporates the idea of living in harmony with your environment for the purpose of contentment. The kitchen is a great example of merging the two traditions-the large glass windows on either side give the home a feeling of continuity with its mountain surroundings, and the intentional placement of furnishings achieves a feeling of harmony. Overall, this unique design allows the home to flow within the environment, rather than clash against it.

When designing the home’s fixtures and finishes, chrome and steel were used to add a more modern and eloquent touch. Glass stair railings and floating sitting spaces were used to emphasize the home’s spacious, airy design. Rather than using opaque materials, we wanted to utilize materials that would accentuate the openness of the mountain home. Keeping in mind the client’s love of art, we also incorporated a few pops of color throughout to adhere to a unique, high-end and modern design. The Windy Hill home is a true sanctuary, completely unique to our client’s vision.
