Active COVID-19 cases drop to 1596, 13 total deaths reported

Current active COVID-19 cases in the Virgin Islands (VI) as of July 16, 2021, have dropped to 1,596 from the previous 1,602 however, there are now 13 total reported deaths, up from the 8 reported on July 15, 2021, according to the latest information.

Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) made the announcement during a COVID-19 update last evening, July 16, 2021, that the pandemic has claimed 13 lives in the VI thus far, with 12 in 2021 and 1 in 2020.

These stats were further broken down by the Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronald E. Georges during the COVID-19 update broadcasted live on the Facebook page of the Government of the VI.

According to Dr Georges, the drop in total cases came as a result of the number of new positive cases dropping off, as well as the active caseload leveling off in the territory.

These stats were broken down by the Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronald E. Georges during a COVID-19 update last evening, July 16, 2021, broadcasted live on the Facebook page of the Government of the VI.

First dip in active cases since outbreak

“Today was the first day where we saw a dip in active cases and those of you would have been following the number would have seen that we went from 1,602 active cases to 1,596 active cases,” he said during the update.

The new lower active caseload came as a result of 35 recoveries and 34 new cases with a few 'unfortunate deaths' he said.

Dr Georges also indicated that the large majority of the cases remain asymptomatic where the persons infected are under quarantine or in isolation, with more projected fall in new cases predicted for the next coming weeks.

To date, the territory has detected 2024 total COVID-19 cases with 420 recoveries and 12 deaths. In addition, some 24,647 persons have received the COVID-19 vaccines with 14,208 receiving the first dose and 10,439 receiving both doses.
