Acts of violence are ‘uncivilised’ & should be condemned- DCP Alwin James

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has noted a “disturbing rise” in the number of serious assaults this past week, two of which were perpetrated against security officers by persons trying to enter premises without face masks.

According to the RVIPF, security personnel at two establishments, a nightclub in Long Bush and the other at a supermarket in East End, received medical treatment for injuries inflicted by persons who were stopped from entering for not wearing face masks.

Virgin Islands News Online had first and accurately reported on both of the mentioned incidents.

“Similarly, persons in separate incidents were taken to hospital for injuries sustained in fights between present or former friends, coworkers and neighbours,” the RVIPF said in a press release today, October 26, 2020.

Our newsroom had reported on Saturday, October 24, 2020, that a Virgin Gorda man was on October 23, 2020, taken to the Nurse Iris O'Neal Medical facility after a brutal beating by two men while at a social event for the St Ursula Holiday on Lee Road, Virgin Gorda.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) has noted a 'disturbing rise' in the number of serious assaults this past week, two of which were perpetrated against security officers by persons trying to enter premises without face masks.

A fight between three men at a social event for the St Ursula Holiday at a bar on Lee Road, Virgin Gorda on October 23, 2020, had left one wounded and hospitalised.

No excuse’ for such 'uncivilised' acts- DCP Alwyn James

Deputy Commissioner Alwin James, according to the press release, said he was “disturbed” with what appears to be a lack of restraint and self-control by some members of the community.

“We are not only witnessing an inability by some to resist the temptation to inflict injury on those carrying out their duties, but we are also seeing premeditated and orchestrated assaults on colleagues, friends and neighbours in our civilised community.

"Arresting those responsible is one thing but some of those injuries are serious and could be permanent. It is important as a community that we accept no excuse for these acts of violence but voice our unified disapproval. It is uncivilised and must be condemned by all of us,” Mr James said.

Meanwhile, according to the RVIPF, charges have not yet been made in the assault matters, as investigations are ongoing.
