Airports to close today until Tropical Storm Fiona passes

The BVI Airports Authority has informed the public that the territory’s airports will be closed today until Tropical Storm Fiona has passed by the territory.
The BVIAA noted the Auguste George International Airport on Anegada and Taddy Bay International Airport in Virgin Gorda will close at sunset while the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island will close at 7 pm local time.

“We are therefore asking all employees and stakeholders to ensure their offices, property, equipment etcetera are secured by the close of business today,” the press release noted.

“Once the ‘All Clear’ has been given, an assessment will be undertaken on all the facilities of each airport to make sure they are operationally safe, and a further press release issued to announce their openings,” the statement continued.

The last update by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) indicated that at 11 am this morning, Tropical Storm Fiona was approximately 425 miles east southeast of Road Town.

The territory is still under a Tropical Storm Watch.

“A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours. Persons are asked to make sure their preparedness plans are in place and stay tuned to DDM social media pages and local radio stations for updates,” DDM said.
