Almshouse to be constructed for homeless & needy– Dr the Hon Wheatley

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) said plans are underway to construct a shelter for persons in need or homeless.

He said last night, February 23, 2022, during the District 7 Town Hall Meeting at the Church of God of Prophecy in Long Look that the Government of the Virgin Islands recently acquired property in Long Look to construct it.

‘We are going to put what we call almshouse on it,” he revealed.

An almshouse is charitable housing provided to people in a particular community.

Dr Wheatley continued: “And, the Minister [for Health & Social Development] just today showed me the designs for that house, so persons in the district who have been struggling and homeless will have a place to be able to lay their heads at night and we are moving forward with that.”

Things are happening

The Minister told attendees that things are happening in his district.

“So don’t take the absence of noise for the lack of activity, things are happening in the background and of course, you are going to see that almshouse move forward. We have the design now and the Minister is going to deliver on that for me.”

Dr Wheatley also informed that a tender has been awarded for the construction of a home for a resident of his district.
