‘Andy the Anchor’ to educate VI students about BVIPA & maritime careers

With the ultimate aim to generate interest in the maritime trade and to encourage persons to seek careers in that field, the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) has launched a Pilot Port Education Programme for primary and secondary school students in the Virgin Islands.

According to a press release from the (BVIPA) on January 11, 2022, the new initiative focuses on teaching students about port functions, international trade, and maritime careers.

The Pilot Port Education Programme focuses on teaching students about port functions, international trade, and maritime careers.

Pilot Port Education Programme

The Pilot Port Education Programme, which aims to engage students in educational outreach at various age levels, is a resource for primary and secondary students, and an online learning tool that addresses the themes of: What is a Port?, the BVIPA’s 3 Main Business Anchors and Careers, Partnering Agencies and Stakeholders and the overall role that ports play in our local economy.

“Students will hopefully gain a greater interest in the maritime trade and choose to pursue careers in that field,” BVIPA’s Managing Director Oleanvine Maynard stated.

She continued to state that “this programme will help equip students with knowledge and understanding of the diverse work and career opportunities related to our ports.”

Andy the Anchor!

Andy the Anchor, the Programme’s mascot was designed and created to help raise awareness and interest in this diverse industry.

Currently, two presentations are available on the BVIPA website for students and teachers, with additional ones to be added early next year, the BVIPA stated.
