Arrest Made in Connection to Stabbing of Iranian Journalist in London

A third suspect detained as investigations continue into the attack on journalist Pouria Zeraati.
In a developing case that has attracted significant attention, a 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of prominent journalist Pouria Zeraati outside his home in southwest London.

The attack, which occurred on March 29, targeted Zeraati as he approached his vehicle on Queensmere Road, Wimbledon, resulting in a leg injury.

The latest arrest brings the total number of individuals detained in relation to the incident to three.

The suspect, whose arrest was announced on [date], is being investigated for conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

Following his arrest, he was taken to a west London police station and has subsequently been released on bail pending further inquiries, scheduled for April.

This development follows the prior detainment of two Romanian nationals, Nandito Badea, 20, and George Stana, 24, who were extradited from Romania on December 17, 2024.

The pair, accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, have appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

Currently in custody, they are due to appear at the Old Bailey on January 17.

The attack on Zeraati has spotlighted the dangers faced by journalists reporting on contentious international issues.

Zeraati is affiliated with Iran International, a London-based broadcaster known for its critical coverage of the Iranian regime.

Despite the potentially chilling effects of the attack, Zeraati resumed his duties on April 5, reaffirming his dedication to journalism with the statement, "the show must go on" during his programme, The Last Word.

Iran International has previously been labeled a terrorist organisation by the government in Tehran, an action indicative of the broadcaster's strained relations with Iranian authorities and the high stakes involved in its reporting.

Following the attack, authorities reported that two suspects fled the scene in a blue Mazda 3, driven by a third individual, and later abandoned the vehicle in New Malden.

Investigations have included searches of properties in the Cricklewood and Finchley areas as police continue to piece together the events surrounding the attack.

The arrest marks a key point in an ongoing investigation that involves complex international elements and highlights the significant risks facing journalists operating in the diaspora.

Further inquiry is expected as officials seek to untangle the full extent of the conspiracy and its implications.
