At least 500 a day! Roughly 15% of population now vaccinated

Roughly 15 per cent of the BVI’s estimated 30,030 population has been vaccinated against COVID-19 as of March 3.

This percentage translates to 4,450 residents.

They represent the number of persons who have received the first dose of the COVID vaccine. Health officials will begin administering the second doses later this month.

Those second doses will be administered using the last half of the 8,000+ vaccines received in February.

This means the BVI will not be inoculating any new persons until the territory receives its next shipment of vaccines scheduled to arrive on March 17.

One to two per cent of population was vaccinated daily

In the meantime, Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronald Georges said the territory was vaccinating 500 to 600 persons per day, before the temporary halt.

This was being done across seven vaccination centres territory-wide.

The Health Ministry plans to open a total of 16 vaccination centres so the territory’s rate of inoculation could very well be doubled once the new vaccine shipments arrive and the remaining centres open.
