Australian Law Bans Under-16s from Social Media

New Legislation Aims to Reduce Harm to Young Australians
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a new law banning under-16s from using social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and X.

Approved by parliament, this legislation is intended to reduce harm among children, mirroring similar restrictions like the ban on alcohol for under-18s, which Albanese acknowledges are sometimes circumvented.

Social media companies face fines up to Aus$50 million (US$32.5 million) for non-compliance, although they have criticized the law as vague and rushed.

The law will take effect after 12 months but lacks details on enforcement, leaving experts concerned about its practical implementation.
