Boris and Carrie share first picture of newborn son

The first picture of Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds’ newborn son has been released.
New mother Carrie posted a photo of her cradling their baby, named Wilfred Lawrie Nicholas Johnson, to Instagram this afternoon.

The little boy is seen all snuggled up in a cream knitted blanket, showcasing a full head of blonde hair.

His mum revealed today that he was named after both parents’ grandparents, as well as the two doctors that saved the prime minister’s life from coronavirus in April.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘Introducing Wilfred Lawrie Nicolas Johnson born on 29.04.20 at 9am.

‘Wilfred after Boris’ grandfather. Lawrie after my grandfather. Nicholas after Dr Nick Price and Dr Nick Hart – the two doctors that saved Boris’ life last month.

‘Thank you so, so much to the incredible NHS maternity team at UCLH that looked after us so well. I couldn’t be happier. My heart is full.’

The two medics later shared their ‘warm congratulations’ with the couple in a statement that read: ‘We are honoured and humbled to have been recognised in this way, and we give our thanks to the incredible team of professionals who we work with at Guy’s at St Thomas’ and who ensure every patient receives the best care. We wish the new family every health and happiness.’

Dr Nicholas Price is a consultant in infectious diseases and general medicine, according to the Guys and St Thomas’ NHS trust website, with further expertise in infection prevention and control.

Professor Nicholas Hart is the director of the Lane Fox Respiratory Service at the Guys and St Thomas’ trust, and a professor of respiratory and critical care medicine at King’s College London.

He has expertise in rehabilitation and home mechanical ventilation with chronic respiratory failure, according to his profile.

Downing Street would not confirm if Wilfred was born prematurely, and did not provide details of the weight, timing, nature or location of the birth.

However, it was confirmed that the prime minister was present at the birth of his son.

The Tory leader was due to take two weeks paternity leave, but has confirmed he will take time off later in the year in order to keep a ‘firm grip’ on decisions about the Covid-19 lockdown.

He and Carrie announced the pregnancy, along with their engagement, on Instagram on February 29.

She wrote: ‘I wouldn’t normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me.

‘Many of you already know but for my friends that still don’t, we got engaged at the end of last year… and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer.’

The birth came just two days after the Conservative politician made his return to work after battling a severe case of coronavirus in hopsital.

In his first post-recovery appearance on Monday, he told the nation the lockdown must continue for a while yet.
