Britain marks 980 virus deaths
Britain on Friday recorded 980 new deaths from coronavirus within 24 hours, surpassing Italy's highest daily death toll for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.
A further 980 people succumbed to the virus in Britain in the 24 hours to Thursday evening, Health Minister Matt Hancock said on Friday, bringing the total number of virus-related deaths to 8,958. The number of infections stands at 19,304.
Italy recorded 969 deaths on March 27, its worst day so far. Daily death numbers have been falling in Italy, the country hit worst by coronavirus pandemic.
It reported 570 new deaths from the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, down from the previous day's 610, bringing the total number of fatalities to 18,849.
