Broad curriculum review in the works — Education Minister
Education Minister Sharie deCastro has indicated that a review of the curriculum for the territory’s schools is expected to be rolled out this year.
According to the minister, that review will be done to ensure the school’s curriculum is aligned with the tenets of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).
“The last curriculum review was done in 2007. Therefore, we are long overdue for a review which will commence this year,” deCastro said at a recent press conference.
As part of that mandate, deCastro said her ministry will support modern and effective resources for Early Childhood, Languages, Mathematics, Science, Technical Subjects, Music, Art, Physical Education and Special Education.
“This is because we strongly believe that our schools must be fully equipped with the necessary resources to facilitate teaching and learning efficiently,” the minister stated.
Policies will also be reviewed
Minister deCastro also announced the revision of several policies to support the transformation of education for the territory.
These policies include the Education Act, Early Childhood Education Policy, the Special Education Policy; Promotion, Placement & Retention Policy; Graduation Requirements, S.T.E.A.M. Policy, a Curriculum Policy, Professional Standards for Educators, and an update to the Discipline Policy and Student Code of Conduct.
She offered an assurance that funding was now available to deliver educational manipulatives and teaching aids for all subject areas.
“Whether students are kinaesthetic, visual, auditory, social, solitary, verbal or logical learners; our teachers will be equipped with much needed resources to diversify their delivery of instruction to achieve optimal learning,” deCastro said.
