BVI under Tropical Storm Warning!

The British Virgin Islands is under a Tropical Storm Warning. In this instance, the warning means tropical storm conditions are expected in the area within the next 36 hours.

In an 11 am weather bulletin on Tuesday, July 28, the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said the Antigua Meteorological Office issued the warning based on the “potential impact” of a tropical cyclone that recently developed in the area.

At 11 am, the weather system was located 585 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands and had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour.

“Forecasters expect this system to produce heavy rains and possible flash floods, so further warnings may be issued as the system approaches our area,” the DDM said.

Commence early preparations

Meanwhile, Premier Andrew Fahie urged residents during a statement on Monday start finalising hurricane plans.

“We must remain in a state of readiness. We want you to remain safe. I encourage everyone to continue their preparedness to mitigate the hazards that we may encounter,” Fahie stated.

He added: “The people of the Virgin Islands can be assured that your government will continue to do its part to be ready for the Atlantic Hurricane Season. I continue to be immensely grateful for the continued support of many teams in the ministries, departments, and statutory bodies of government that continue to work together to ensure preparedness.”
