BVIPA MD Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard not seeking release from jail

BVIPA MD Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard not seeking release from jail

Accused Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) Ms Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard has waived her right to a detention hearing in US courts.

Pickering-Maynard, along with ex-premier of the Virgin Islands Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) was arrested at a Miami airport on April 28, 2022, by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on charges related to conspiracy to import a controlled substance and money laundering.

In an order published last week, she was ordered detained after Magistrate Judge Lauren Louis considered Maynard’s pre-trial services report and determined that the risk of flight and the danger she presented to the community warranted her continued detention.

The detention order does allow Maynard’s counsel to request a full detention hearing at any time in the future should she decide to seek release.

Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard, left, along with ex-premier of the Virgin Islands Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), right, was arrested at a Miami airport on April 28, 2022, by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) on charges related to conspiracy to import a controlled substance and money laundering.

VI Gov’t seeking to fire Pickering-Maynard

In an update to the territory on May 11, 2022, Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) disclosed that the [British] Virgin Islands Government is seeking to terminate Ms Oleanvine Pickering-Maynard as Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA).

According to Dr Wheatley, the legal and practical issues involved in terminating the appointment of the current Managing Director are being examined and updates in this regard will be forthcoming.

Pickering-Maynard’s son Kadeem Maynard, who has also been arrested by US authorities on similar charges, is yet to make his initial appearance before the Southern District Court in Florida.

His last known location was detention in Puerto Rico, where he was awaiting transport to Miami.

Hon Fahie still seeking bail

Hon Fahie, on the other hand, is seeking release from the Detention Centre in Miami.

A US judge had ruled that Hon Fahie be granted $500,000 bond and conditions of release at a detention hearing on May 4, 2022, but that order has been stayed pending an appeal by prosecutors.
