Catherine Pickering was found in ‘great agony’

Details from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Tiffany Scatliffe-Esprit, into the grisly Paraquita Bay murder on April 18 indicate that 67-year-old Catherine Pickering suffered when she was fatally shot.
The senior citizen was shot in the head and chest with 7.62 bullets from an AK47 rifle.

“… After the gunshots abated, Ms [Maricel] Pickering eventually made her way back to her mother (Catherine) when she met her conscious but in great agony laying in what appeared to be a pool of blood with apparent gunshot wounds to her head and chest,” the DDP reported.

Scatliffe-Esprit was speaking in the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for the arrest appearance of 22-year-old Akeem Hopkinson and 28-year-old Shameek Grant.

The accused men are charged for murder, robbery, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The DPP alleges that about 7 pm on the night in question, Maricel closed her business — Big Brothers Gas Station — to head home. She had in her possession a plastic bag containing $3,100 which is said to be her day’s earnings.

She gave a ride to her employee, Shemar Richardson who is accused of feeding inside information to the perpetrators who executed the crime.

When she eventually arrived at her Paraquita Bay residence which she shares with her mother, Catherine, she exited the vehicle and was startled by a male voice saying “give me the money”.

She dropped the plastic bag and ran, the court heard.

And as she was running away, she heard several gunshots being fired at her so she sought refuge on the porch of her mother’s dwelling while screaming for help. Catherine, who was home, responded to her daughter’s screams and was fatally shot.

She died less than 24 hours later.
