CoI: UK dirty but using 'sledgehammer to kill a fly’ in OTs- Robert C. Hall

Former Speaker of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) House of Assembly, Mr Robert C. Hall has called out the double standards of the UK for not "cleaning their house,” yet going to extremes measures to sort house UK Overseas Territories (OTs).

Appearing as a virtual guest on the October 14, 2021, edition of the Honestly Speaking show moderated by Claude O. Skelton-Cline, Mr Hall, who is also a former TCI Minister of Government said it is a typical duplicitous nature of UK Governments to not abide by the same rules and standards they hold others against.

Skelton-Cline, Mr Hall, who is also a former TCI Minister of Government said it is a typical duplicitous nature of UK Governments to not abide by the same rules and standards they hold others against.

Spotlight placed on UK double standards

“The thing is, as usual, the British… they do not sweep around their own door first and then so often they tend to use a sledgehammer to kill a fly,” outside of the UK.

He said the scenario is part of the unequal treatment the British impose on their overseas territories. “When it's convenient they talk about a partnership, but if ever there is a one-sided partnership, it is that relationship as I see… that the British has with the overseas territory,” he said.

According to Mr Hall, the UK only boasts of its relationship with the OTs when it is beneficial.

“They are proud to boast about their diversity including, of course, the Overseas Territory and its various assets [such as] beaches, waters, etc… but I say again, it is a very one-sided relationship,” Hall related.

Meanwhile, with the fifth-highest COVID-19 death toll to date in the world, UK Prime Minister (UK) Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson ‘aka ‘Boris’ has resisted calls for an immediate inquiry into his Government’s handling of COVID-19 to focus more on the pandemic, even as the very government is carrying out a COI into the Virgin Islands.

UK holding others to standards they won’t follow

Young Virgin Islander and Silk Legal Attorney-at-Law, Mr Daniel F. Davies while appearing on the May 4, 2021, edition of the ‘Honestly Speaking’ further illustrated the duplicitous nature of the UK.

He said if a CoI now, is not the right time in the UK, it cannot be right to execute one on the Virgin Islands that is facing the same pandemic.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CoI was announced by embattled ex-governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert, who was accused of trying to bully the democratically elected government headed by Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and causing a strain in the relationship between government and the electorate.
