Noting that commercialisation and modernisation have weakened the bonds of togetherness in the Virgin Islands, Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), in his Christmas Day Message, today, December 25, 2022, has called for the rejuvenating of the Virgin Islands’ family spirit.
According to the Premier, Christmas is about family, and people in
the Virgin Islands have always lived as one big family.
“We can all remember the good old days of family and friends gathering at each other’s homes, the aroma of fresh bread, cakes, our favourite flavoured tarts, cassava bread and ham baking in the brick oven, the delicious smell from the barbeque grill, the laughter of children playing together, the excitement of going house to house caroling and spreading cheer, and receiving cheer and partaking in sweet guavaberry.”
Premier Wheatley said Christmas was a time of genuine and it brought everyone close together.
Bonds & kindred spirit weakened
“Many of the things that influence the society today, such as the commercialisation and modernisation and the rigors of everyday life, have weakened the bonds and kindred spirit of some of us.”
Additionally, Premier Wheatley said the VI people have been through a lot in the last few years, including the loss of loved ones, and if there was any other time the people of
the Virgin Islands need to feel each other’s presence and support it is now.
“Let us make it our individual and collective mission this Christmas to rejuvenate our Virgin Islands family spirit,” Dr Wheatley urged.
