Constitutional Review Consultations are not political meetings– Hon Malone

Opposition Member, Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has called on members of the Virgin Islands' public to partake in the ongoing Constitutional Review Commission and not be worried that their words will be held against them.

Speaking via a telephone interview on the Monday, November 21, 2022, edition of ‘Da Morning Braff’ radio show, Hon Malone said concerns are being raised as it relates to persons appearing for consultations.

“One of the concerns that [the] chairperson has said is that there are a number of persons, when they come out… they don’t want to be broadcasted, don’t want to be on air,” he said.

The Commission has so far not been live-streaming the consultation meetings.

“This is not a political meeting that you are talking about. This is your constitution and I really feel whether you are a public official, civil servant, you’re private, coming and stating your views cannot and should not be held against you,” he said.

Hon Malone reminded that consultations remain very important to the process, as different concerns are being raised from different parts of the territory. “The concerns voiced in West End is different than the concerns voiced in East End,” he added.

Hon Malone further noted that if everyone in the VI can have different concerns and share them, it could make for a better constitution that would go on to affect everyone.
