Consultations on Whistleblower, Contractor General laws start today
Government will be hosting public consultations into its proposed Contractor General and Whistleblower legislations being introduced to promote greater transparency and accountability within the government.
Those consultations commence 5 pm today, May 3 at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School on Tortola.
The government will then continue with what it describes as a Public Eye discussion online and on ZBVI radio at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 4.
The Andrew Fahie administration will then travel to Virgin Gorda for a 5:30 pm consultation at the Catholic Community Centre.
The Whistleblowers Act — which will, among other things, reward persons who report individuals involved in corrupt practices — has already been introduced in the House of Assembly but is yet to be debated.
The legislation allows any public officer or private worker to be able to legally make reports without penalised by the employer. Persons are however warned that whistleblowers must have evidence if bringing a report.
On the other hand, the Contractor General Act effectively monitors and investigates the award and implementation of government contracts and licences.
