COVID-19 vaccination drive-thru launched for 2nd dose jabs

COVID-19 vaccination drive-thru launched for 2nd dose jabs

The Government of the Virgin Islands (VI) is hosting yet another operation ‘Protect Each Other’ Vaccination Drive-Thru from today, Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Festival Grounds in Tortola from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., until Tuesday, August 31, 2021, to provide easier access to persons getting their second dose of COVID-19 vaccines.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Ms. Tasha K. Bertie commended those persons who followed the protocols and got vaccinated, however, warned that the current vaccine stocks will expire on August 31, 2021.

VI residents who have received their first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine prior to July 25 are encouraged to use this opportunity to get their second dose before August 31.

Ms. Bertie said the date is in keeping with the 4-week timeframe between jabs so that persons can be deemed fully vaccinated.

4,193 second doses still to be given

So far, 12,907 persons have been fully vaccinated in the VI as of August 27, while 4,193 persons received their first dose and are to prepare to receive their second dose.

The required two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine is said to produce a greater antibody response within a 4 to 12-week timeframe between jabs, according to research data.

This allows for full vaccination status and is said to provide more protection against COVID-19 and it variants, as well as lessen the chances of hospitalization and death as a result of the virus.

Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has said last evening Friday, August 27, 2021, that some 5,500 more persons in the VI needed to take the jab for the territory to achieve COVID-19 herd immunity.
