David D. Archer Jr is Acting Governor until John J. Rankin sworn in

With the departure of controversial Governor Mr Augustus J. U. Jaspert for the final time on January 23, 2021, Deputy Governor Mr David D. Archer, Jr has been sworn in as Acting Governor of the Virgin Islands.

Mr Archer, who was sworn in as Acting Governor on January 22, 2021, will serve as Acting Governor until Friday, January 29, 2021, when Governor-Elect Mr John J. Rankin, CMG is sworn in as Governor.

Mr Archer’s appointment is in accordance with section 37 (1) (a) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order, 2007 which states, “During any period when the office of Governor is vacant, or the Governor is absent from the Virgin Islands or is for any other reason unable to perform the functions of his or her office, the Deputy Governor shall, during Her Majesty’s pleasure, act in the office of Governor and shall perform the functions of that office accordingly.”

Meanwhile, Mr Jaspert left these shores under a cloud of negativity, including questions regarding his motive for calling a Commission of Inquiry into governance.

His exit was made with a simple ceremony.
