Dior Couture Offers an Ingenious Twist on Bold Black Eyeliner

Dior Couture Offers an Ingenious Twist on Bold Black Eyeliner

For the house’s haute couture fall/winter 2021 show, Maria Grazia Chiuri contrasted feminine dresses with an everyday punk look.

At a time when masks just might be the new normal, nothing is more empowering than a bold eye-which was the message underpinning the beauty looks at Dior’s haute couture fall/winter 2021 show.

Underneath tweed riding hats and above Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection of shimmering diaphanous dresses, creative and image director of Christian Dior Makeup Peter Philips underlined models’ eyes with a deep blue for an everyday punk look.

“The look is elegant and a bit edgy,” says Philips. “It’s a very graphic eye, but it's got a bit of a soft edge. We actually went back to what we did for pre-fall, which was an under-eyeliner, where I added glitter patches on top, which Maria Grazia really liked. But, we wanted to do it in an intense blue using a matte black and with the color Denim from the 5 Couleurs Couture [Eyeshadow] Palette over it.”

Accentuating the eyes further, Philips enhanced models’ brows according to their natural shade, while skin was kept matte and lips neutral with a Rouge Dior Lip Balm.

Over on hair, stylist Guido Palau kept things modern and clean with locks slicked back into low ponytails and styled with center partings.

Dior is just the latest to bring bold, smoky eyeliner to the runway, perhaps forecasting a fall focused on makeup that works for both a sultry late-night out or a statement-making day.
