Dominican allegedly beats wife after dreaming she cheated on him

Dominican allegedly beats wife after dreaming she cheated on him

A Dominica national, who had no prior antecedents and who said he was a respectable and active member of his church, appeared virtually before the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, August 27, 2020, accused of beating his wife after he dreamt that she was cheating on him.

James Alexander was slapped with three charges: Common Assault, Criminal Damage and Criminal Trespass. He did not enter pleas because he told the court he intended to hire an attorney.

Allegations of the matter

Prosecutor Annjel X. Flax told the virtual sitting of the court that the offences occurred on August 22 and 24, 2020.

She said, on August 22, 2020, the family was at their Virgin Gorda home at about 9:00pm when the defendant said he had a dream and asked the VC to swear on the bible that she was not having an affair.

During the night, he woke up and proceeded to search the VC’s phone after asking her for the passwords.

After reading text messages on her phone, he smashed one of the devices on the floor. He then dragged the VC to their bedroom, tugging on her hair and sat her on the bed, asking her to tell him everything.

Assault with toy gun

The prosecutor said during the assault, the defendant used a toy gun to beat the VC.

During that time, the defendant cited a text message from a man in her phone and told her to call the individual, or he would harm her, and she complied.

The man answered the call and denied all the allegations that were put to him by the defendant.

The accused then put the VC to kneel on the tile and threatened to use a shoe to hit her on her head and to break her collar bone.

While he assaulted the VC, she screamed loudly and tried to escape the beatings and the children, hearing her cries, came to the room and witnessed the assault before they were ordered to return to their room.

The defendant then grabbed the VC by her neck and chest and made more accusations at her.

A report was subsequently made to the Virgin Gorda Police Station the following day after the defendant told her she was free to report the matter.

Left home

Allegations are that the VC proceeded to leave the house with her children on Monday, August 24, 2020, to stay with her boss.

However, the defendant followed her to the residence and did not immediately leave the premises, despite the owners telling him that he should leave.

They reported the incident, and Alexander was charged with criminal trespass.

The police then escorted the VC to the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic where she was examined, and her injuries included multiple bruises to the neck, left breast, right forearm, left arm and forearm a cracked nail on the left index and middle finger, multiple bruises to both knees and a neck strain.

The defendant was eventually arrested, and his statement was taken after which he, too, was taken to the clinic for injuries on his hand.

During his interview with police, he allegedly admitted he assaulted the VC.

Bail

Despite objections from the prosecution, including that the accused would constantly abuse his wife but that this was the most severe case, Senior Magistrate Tamia N. Richards said she would grant the accused $40,000 signed bail but he would be remanded until she knows who the signed sureties are and is able to advise them properly on the bail conditions.

He would; however, have to reside somewhere else, and pledge to not interfere with his family unless it is to visit his children and that would be handled by the Social Development Department.

The matter continues today, August 28, 2020.
