Dr June M. Samuel appointed Interim CEO - Chief of Medical Staff @ BVHISA

Word reaching our newsroom is that Dr June M. Samuel has been appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer (ag), Chief of Medical Staff at the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) to take effect from Monday, May 16, 2022.
Financial Comptroller Angelina John held the post as acting CEO for a few months after former Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Cedorene Patricia Malone-Smith, and the Human Resources Manager, Levor A. H Lettsome were both reportedly sent home in December 2021.

Dr Samuels, a trained Psychiatrist is often regarded as the first female Psychiatrist in the BVI having attended the University of the West Indies in Barbados and then completed her MBBS in Jamaica.

As part of her accomplishment in the local mental health field in the VI, she oversaw the restructuring and reorganization of mental health services with staff who are capable of responding to a wide range of mental health disorders.

Dr Samuel also instituted observation of Mental Health Month in May for locals to focus on awareness and increased education around mental health.

She was also the lead on a comprehensive Modern Healthcare Act that is now recommended as a model to other islands in the Caribbean.
