Apple, Meta and Google parent company investigated by EU

The EU is investigating Apple, Meta, and Google's parent company under the new Digital Markets Act, with potential fines up to 10% of their global revenue for non-compliance.
This act, effective from March, targets tech giants' "gatekeeping" practices, demanding fair treatment for app developers and third-party services in app stores and search listings.

Concerns include Apple and Google's restrictions on promoting rival services and Apple's software uninstall and default setting policies. Meta faces scrutiny over its "pay or consent" model's data use compliance.

Despite ongoing discussions and some market changes, EU Commissioner Thierry Breton notes not all company solutions meet the requirements for a fair, open digital space.

This investigation follows a recent €1.8bn fine against Apple for market dominance abuse. Apple, Google, and Meta assert compliance efforts or defend their practices, signalling ongoing regulatory challenges for tech giants in Europe.
