Expat vs local talk in VI ‘tore away at my heart’- Angelle A. Cameron

Outspoken radio host and former Mrs BVI, Angelle A. Cameron says that over the 2020 year in the Virgin Islands, the contention over expats and locals in the territory is one that has 'torn away at her heart'.

Mrs Cameron, a co-host of the MY BVI radio show on ZKing 100.9FM made the comments on the Tuesday, December 22, 2020, edition of the show, alongside Bishop John I. Cline and Dr Albert L. Thompkins during a conversation in reflection of the 2020 year.

Locals vs expats

Speaking on the expat vs local argument, Ms Cameron said, “Unfortunately, over the course of this year one of the arguments that really tore away at my heart was that argument about people who are expatriates living in our territory and people who are indigenous Virgin Islanders,” she said.

She said people in the territory need to recognize that the human race is one, regardless of the origins of people who now call the VI their home.

“At the end of the day, we are all from one race and it doesn’t really matter which island or country we come from, we are all humans,” she said.

Cameron continued, “We saw the divide globally and we know it exists here in the Virgin Islands as it relates to the racial divide, but none of that should affect the way our community remains resilient.”

Building resiliency in the VI community

The My BVI Radio co-host underscored that a way to keep building resiliency in the territory is by keeping families together and paying attention to the households, especially single-parent families who struggle, in an effort to offer more support.

Cameron called for both the people and government to take stock of data relating to families in the VI, such as those affected the most by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This she says could account for wayward youths and re-integrate them back into the family, in an afford to regain a sense of community.
