Facebook and its corresponding applications including WhatsApp and Instagram went down on Monday and many persons fear they may be gone forever.
A large section of the applications’ routing information has been deleted.
This signals a ‘code red’ situation for the tech/social media giants. The developed tools and emails are all gone and the domain has been removed from the global registry.
A quick search on Google showed the ‘
Facebook.com’ server IP address could not be found.
Around 11 am local time,
Facebook Messenger and Oculus began displaying error messages. Within five minutes, the site disappeared from the internet. Hours later, the site still has not regained function.
According to
Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer: “We [
Facebook] are experiencing networking issues and teams are working as fast as possible to debug and restore as fast as possible”.
This crash comes after
Facebook whistle-blower Frances Haugen, a 37-year-old former
Facebook product manager, revealed that
Facebook knows its platforms are used to spread hate, violence and misinformation.
She said the company has tried to hide the evidence.
“The thing I saw at
Facebook over and over again was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for
Facebook, and
Facebook over and over again chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money,” Haugen told “60 Minutes.”
