Premier and Finance Minister Hon. Andrew Fahie is championing the cause for a Governor’s Code of Conduct to be established.
But the Premier said some persons believe his position is ludicrous.
“I keep championing the cause for a Governor’s code. Some people say it’s ludicrous, I tell them no one man should be above reproach, and no man should be above reproach. Not in the 21st century,” Premier
Fahie said in the House of Assembly last evening, June 16.
He was at the time speaking to the fact that his government came in and move forward with the setting up of a Code of Conduct for Ministers.
“We said that it is time to get a code on how we operate. The committee has been formed and they are going to work,” he stated.
The Premier and the current United Kingdom (UK) Representative, Governor Augustus Jaspert have clashed on a number of issues in recent times. Both have fended off accusations that their relationship is strained.
Back in April, Premier
Fahie said that the Ministerial Code is a document that sets out guidelines and standards for Government Ministers. He said it is expected that Ministers would conduct themselves according to the highest standards of constitutional and personal conduct in the performance of their duties in line with best practices.
The Premier stated that Codes of Conduct for Ministers are among a range of initiatives designed to uphold transparency and standards of ministerial accountability and to preserve public trust in the institutions of Cabinet Government.
The chairman of the committee is Mr. Ronnie Skelton, former Minister for Health and Former Minister of Finance under the National Democratic Party (NDP) and leader of the Progressive Virgin Island Movement (PVIM).
