Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Andrew Fahie has disclosed plans to ink an agreement while in Barbados that will facilitate the establishment of a medical school in the Territory.
The Premier is currently attending the 31st Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, the Caribbean Community bloc.
"Today, I will be signing an agreement for us as a Territory to establish medical schools through the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professionals," the Premier stated.
Several administrations have indicated the need to facilitate medical schools in the Territory.
In 2018, the then Minister of Education and Culture, Hon. Myron Walwyn issued a Higher Education License to the University of Science Arts and Technology (USAT), which was identified as first offshore medical school to enter the Territory of
the Virgin Islands.
The institution should have opened a year later.
USAT was licensed following the passing of the Higher Education Licensing Act, 2015, in 2016 to allow for the establishment of offshore medical, engineering, culinary and other institutions for higher learning in the BVI.
There is an application fee of $5,000 that medical schools will have to pay and there is a $10,000 annual licensing fee.
