Festivals will happen ‘in some shape or form’- Premier Fahie

Now that the Virgin Islands is learning to live and work in this COVID-19 era, efforts are being put in certain events that had to be postponed or reduced to a virtual experience. This includes the VG Easter Festival and VI Emancipation Festival.

"Since then we have recognised that we are doing a much better job of individually being responsible for living and working with COVID-19 and we are going to be working with the minister to ensure that festival happens in some shape and form in a responsible way because we still are going to monitor the COVID-19," Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) told JTV News on March 15, 2022.

He related that government is more comfortable with allowing events of mass gathering to be held with some level of monitoring, but he said the festivities may not be to the magnitude as celebrations were pre Covid 19," because we have to gradually get back into it in a very prudent manner with all we have to face with Covid and all the other challenges that have arrived."

More $$ to be allocated for festivals- Premier

This year; however, only about $60,000 was allocated for festivals, which is a drop in the bucket compared to budgets pre-COVID-19.

“At that time we had to understand the climate we were in when the allocation was done. We were still in the heart of COVID-19, the cases were still high at that time and we were concerned about festivals and so there were not much funds allocated.

The Minister of Finance, Hon Fahie, assured that Government will be working towards finding additional monies for festivals.

According to a flyer shared on Facebook by Acting Sister Islands Coordinator Sasha D. A. Flax in January, the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival is slated for April 15-18, 2022.

The other major festival is the VI Emancipation Festival held in July-August.
