Festive Fare Fiasco: Christmas Dinner Costs Surge

Potato Prices Propel Yuletide Meal Inflation Well Beyond Forecasts
The cost of a traditional Christmas dinner this year has shot up markedly beyond the national inflation rate, highlighting a growing concern for consumers amidst an otherwise festive atmosphere.

According to leading market analyst Kantar, the average price for a family meal for four now stands at £32.57, a 6.5% increase from last year's £30.58.

This stark rise overshadows the overall grocery inflation of 2.6%, which has climbed from November's 2.3%.

A surprising protagonist in this cost hike is the humble potato, with prices rising 16.2% to an average of £1.65.

Close on its heels is the cauliflower, up 14.6%, and the parsnip, which has seen a 12.7% increase.

The mainstay of any Christmas feast, the turkey, also saw its price soar by 8.5%, marking it as a pricier centerpiece for this year's dinner.

Despite these elevated costs, consumer spending is anticipated to reach unprecedented levels, with supermarkets preparing for sales exceeding £13 billion over December's four weeks.

This surge is buoyed by increased purchases of festive treats like assorted sweet biscuits and cheese biscuits, which doubled in November, alongside an 8% spike in Christmas pudding purchases.

Kantar's head of retail and consumer insight, Fraser McKevitt, expects December 23 to be the pinnacle for supermarket activity this year, emphasizing a trend of early stocking by consumers.

Interestingly, promotional sales hit a peak of 30% in November, largely driven by supermarket loyalty schemes enticing shoppers with holiday indulgences.

Britain's largest grocery chain, Tesco, celebrates its highest market share since 2017, capturing 28.1% of the market, as its sales rose by 5.2% in the past 12 weeks.

Meanwhile, robust performances were seen across other leading retailers such as Sainsbury's and M&S, which noted significant spending increases.

Midsized players like Lidl and Waitrose also witnessed growth, with Lidl becoming the fastest-growing in-store grocer, and Waitrose slightly outpacing market growth.

Cost-savvy shoppers may look to these outlets for better deals amidst the rising costs of staple holiday ingredients.

Yet, the only item escaping the inflationary trend this year is sparkling wine, setting the stage for a potentially spirited Christmas despite fiscal challenges.
