Five inmates now charged for murder after fatal prison stabbing
Five prisoners have now been charged in relation to the stabbing incident that resulted in the death of one inmate, Nichail Chambers, at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut back in May.
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) said investigations conducted by its Major Crime Unit led to the arrests of Andraes Norford, Essadro Jefferson, Rean-J Christopher, Dee Dijon Hodge, and Kareem Durant.
“All five were charged with the murder of Chambers. Additionally, Norford and Jefferson were charged with attempted murder in relation to injuries sustained to another inmate,” the RVIPF said in a media release Wednesday afternoon.
The accused killers will remain at the prison and will appear before the Magistrate’s Court at a future date.
The RVIPF has said today’s arrests indicate the Force’s continued determination to bring all those responsible for serious crime to justice.
“The Major Crime Team continues to ask persons with information relating to this incident to come forward. All information will be treated in the strictest of confidence,” it stated.
Chambers, the inmate that died was 29.
In the wake of the stabbing, an ex-convict at Her Majesty’s Prison revealed in an exclusive interview with BVI News that during his time incarcerated, select inmates were inconspicuously made to leave the prison for minutes to hours at a time at the pleasure of prison officers.
