Fixed! Anegada airport runway now fully lit to accept night flights

The August George Airport also known as the Anegada Airport will soon be receiving regularly scheduled night flights following to completion of works to have the airport runway fully lit.

Last evening November 19, 2021, officers of the BVI Airport Authority and enthusiastic residents of the sister island witnessed what they have not seen in many years, an aircraft landing on a fully lit August George Airport runway.

During the 2019 General elections campaign, the Virgin Islands Party had promised residents that this would have been one of the priorities in office.

Persons residing on Anegada had flagged the unlit runway as a major concern for emergencies and one that could be a major booster for tourism activities if rectified.

Following the successful testing of last evening’s night flight, Premier and Minister of Finance Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1) announced via a social media post, that works have been done to upgrade the facility.

Access to Anegada is crucial to its development - Hon Fahie

"Access to Anegada by sea and air is very crucial to its future development. Night air access has been cut off for many years now. To rectify this situation at the Auguste George International Airport, lights and a backup generator had to be installed on the runway.”

Having completed all the necessary works at the airport, tonight the test run to land at the airport by night was successful," Hon Fahie said.

"We're getting there!!! To God be all the praise and glory," Hon Fahie further said.

According to the Premier, the completion of works now paves the way for more night flights as well as commercial and international flights in and out of Anegada.
