Former Businessman & Public Officer Elihu R. Rhymer BEM passes

The Territory, close friends, and family are mourning the passing of Elihu Rudolph Rhymer B.E.M., who according to family members passed away today Saturday, February 4, 2023, after a long illness at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, the capital city.

He was 80 years old, having been born on November 27, 1942.

The late Rhymer who in his days was a political operator and outspoken resident, is survive by his wife Dr. Patricia Todman-Rhymer, daughter Kimberly Rhymer-Hanley and son Bryan Rhymer, along with a brother Daniel Harrigan.

Originally from North Sound, Virgin Gorda, Mr. Rhymer enjoyed a long and productive career.

Career in public and private sectors

The deceased began his career as a school teacher and later rose through the ranks of the public service to become a Permanent Secretary. Mr. Rhymer, BEM also had many successful entrepreneurial endeavors including the Josiah’s Bay Cottages, BVI Development Consultants, and Best Vacations Imaginable.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Mr. Rhymer served on boards and committees including the BVI Tourist Board and the board of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.

According to family memebrs, Mr Rhymer passed away today Saturday, February 4, 2023, after a long illness at the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital in Road Town, the capital city.

Awarded by Queen for service

At one time he hosted a popular talk show on Radio Station ZBVI 780 AM and had strong political views on the direction of the country.

In 2018 the late Rhymer was awarded a Queen's medal, the British Empire Medal. At the pinning ceremony, his wife Patricia noted, “that her husband Elihu is now extremely proud, but I think he also feels like it’s about time that he was recognized for his service”.
