Hayley Matthews, a former STV and Forth One presenter, was jailed for two years for embezzling one hundred twenty thousand pounds from her dementia-stricken mother. An investigation revealed she used the money for luxury items and unauthorized ATM withdrawals. Matthews pleaded guilty, and the case highlights accountability for exploiting vulnerable victims.
Hayley Matthews, a former presenter for STV and Forth One, has been sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling £120,000 from her mother, Janice Matthews, who suffered from dementia.
The court heard that Matthews, 44, used the funds to purchase luxury items including a handbag, cosmetics, and various other products.
This came to light after family members questioned the value of her mother’s estate, leading to an investigation that revealed significant ATM withdrawals and online purchases from 2019 to 2022.
Matthews pleaded guilty to the charges at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.
Lynne Barrie, the procurator fiscal for Lothian and Borders, emphasized that those who abuse positions of family trust would face accountability.
