Frenchman’s Cay bridge re-construction to start Feb 14, 2022

The long-overdue and urgently needed re-construction of the Frenchman’s Cay bridge will commence on February 14, 2022.

This was revealed during a community meeting on Sunday, January 30, 2022, at the newly renovated West End Community Centre.

Among those present at the meeting were Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), Health Minister Carvin Malone (AL) and Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities, Hon Hon. Kye Rymer (R5), along with his team from the Ministry of Transportation & Works.

It was revealed at the meeting that the project will commence mid-February and that the contractor was selected through an independent and transparent tender process.

“This is a long-overdue problem that needed urgent attention for years. Finally, the issue is now well in-hand,” the Premier added.

Scope of work

The contract was awarded at a cost of $315,753.04 through a Cabinet-backed contract signed in December 2021 to Quality Construction, a company owned by My Roy L. Garroway.

More details of the bridge construction include that the existing 20ft wide bridge will be expanded to 30ft. Mode design improvements include reinforced slabs, retention walls, sidewalks, and guard rails to run the full length of the bridge.

The bridge is also expected to be 1ft higher than the existing bridge.

In addition, in order to ensure that persons can still access the area on a regular basis, the project will also include a 1-lane bypass road with traffic lights to control the traffic.

The project is expected to last four months.
