FTC Launches Investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT over Data Privacy and Misinformation Concerns

FTC Launches Investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT over Data Privacy and Misinformation Concerns

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation into OpenAI, the creator of the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, to determine the company's data privacy rules and actions taken to prevent its technology from providing false information to users.
The investigation was prompted by concerns over potential harms caused by ChatGPT's responses.

The FTC sent a letter to OpenAI requesting detailed information on its business practices, including privacy rules, data security regulations, and processes involving its AI technology.

However, the FTC has not yet commented on the investigation, which was first reported by the Washington Post.

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman expressed disappointment over the investigation, which was leaked to the Washington Post, but pledged to work with investigating officials to address any concerns.

Altman emphasized that the company prioritizes user privacy and ensuring its technology follows the law.

The FTC investigation is not the only legal challenge facing OpenAI.

Comedian Sarah Silverman and two other authors have taken legal action against the company and Facebook owner Meta, alleging copyright infringement.

They claim that OpenAI's AI systems were trained using illegal copies of their works.

Overall, the investigation into OpenAI's ChatGPT highlights the need for companies to prioritize data privacy and ensure their AI technology operates ethically and transparently to build trust with users.
