A German national, Rico Krieger, has been sentenced to death by a court in Minsk, Belarus, on terrorism-related charges.

Berlin's diplomats have condemned the trial, stating that the German government views the death penalty as an inhumane form of punishment.

Krieger, 29, was allegedly involved in mercenary and extremist activities, possibly fighting alongside the Ukrainian military against Russian forces.

The trial reportedly took place behind closed doors, and Krieger was detained in November 2023.

The German Foreign Ministry and embassy in Minsk are providing consular services and communicating with Belarusian authorities on his behalf.
