Gov't Awards 30 Scholarships
The Government of the Virgin Islands has awarded 30 scholarships to local students to pursue higher learning abroad.
Minister for Education Dr. Hon. Natalio Wheatley told BVI Platinum News on Monday that the majority of students will be studying in the United States and are graduates of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).
“Scholarships are $18,000 a year,” he said, for non-medical students and “$20,000 a year for medical students.”
He continued: “30 scholarships were awarded in this instance. Additional scholarships may be awarded subject to the availability of additional funds.”
The full breakdown of the number of students who would be pursuing medical and non-medical studies and the duration of each scholarship is unknown at this time.
His comments come following a post-cabinet meeting statement which indicated that the deciding body approved the recommendations of the BVI Scholarship Committee for the award of Government Scholarships to 52 applicants to pursue studies for the period commencing Fall 2021 – Spring 2022.
In the meantime, Premier and Minister for Finance commented on the programme during his speech on Monday night.
He said: “I also need to further add that this Government has restarted the Scholarships Abroad programme that was left dormant since Irma and Maria. This has allowed scores of our young people to further their tertiary education so that they can return to the BVI and strengthen our human capital and our Virgin Islands economy.”
