Gov’t has not dropped ball with COVID-19 & Omicron- Premier Fahie

Virgin Islands (VI) Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has assured that his government has not dropped the ball on its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new Omicron variant, as the global pandemic rages on.

Premier Fahie provided an update while responding to questions during a live press conference today, December 10, 2021, on an update on current matters in the territory.

“I wouldn’t say we dropped the ball at all, there has been a lot of information out continuously, right now the cases stand at 40, [as of December 9, 2021]… so that’s the official update,” Hon Fahie said.

COVID-19 is not going anywhere, this is nothing new… we have to continuously remind persons… we have to work and live with COVID-19,” he said while reminding that prisons must continue following the local public health measures against the virus.

With a promise to ‘step up’ the vaccination drive, Hon Fahie by the new week, the territory should be expecting new shipments of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines from the UK, given the refrigeration capacity for the Pfizer jabs is now available in the territory.

He said the most the Government will continue do, is encourage persons to take the responsibility to adhere to the public health guidelines, especially during the festive season.

VI cannot live in fear over COVID - Premier


“But we cannot continue to live in fear, we have the vaccines take it, and if you cannot take it and you are against the vaccine that’s your democratic right. But we cannot allow a few persons to get away with carelessness and shut down an entire economy,” he said.

With regards to the Omicron variant, Premier Fahie said updates will come in the new week, “but still even with that, there is nothing else we have been told to do other than the same methodologies that have been listed before, so I just want to encourage persons not to look for excuses,” he said.

Premier Fahie in encouraging vaccination reminded that he always warned VI that other variants will come, “Prepare yourself, vaccinate and if you cannot vaccinate then take care of your immune system. But the truth of the matter is, we just have to live with it,” he said.
