Grandstands at AO Shirley grounds nearly complete!

Repairs to the grandstand located at the AO Shirley Recreation Grounds in Road Town is nearly complete.

A media release from the Recovery & Development Agency (RDA) said the final components needed to complete the project is the arrival of the VIP seating, the shipment of the facility’s lights, and the completion of the pavilion.

“Repairs to the grandstand … are 80 percent completed. The damaged seating is being replaced, and structural reinforcements were applied to the facility, its railings and the stairways,” the release said.

It continued: “The grandstand has a seating capacity for 1,000 persons, and this multi-use facility is home to a gym and sickbay, both which received extensive remedial repairs.”

The release further said repairs to the sporting facility also included renovations to the gym and sickbay as part of one of eight activities of the broader project.

“Five activities have been completed namely the installation of the track, bathrooms, wall and gates (external perimeter fence), bathroom groundworks and drainage and the internal trackside fence,” the RDA stated.

Repair contracts

The RDA awarded two contracts with a combined value of more than $850,000 to two local companies — CW General Maintenance as well as Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited — for repair works. They are both owned by businessman and coach Cliff Williams. The contracts were valued at $575,437.50 and $284,795.64, respectively.

CW General Maintenance were tasked with the responsibility of designing, supplying and installing stadium lighting across the facility. Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited, in the meantime, was tasked with be repairing the grandstand, gym and sickbay at the grounds.

Williams was the only applicant to submit tenders for both procurement opportunities.

The undertaking is funded by the Government of the Virgin Islands, the BVI Athletic Association and BVI Olympic Committee. The facility sustained serious damage during the 2017 hurricanes.
