Hackers compromised the software company SolarWinds and used its software to spy on US government agencies and private companies for months, cybersecurity researchers said Monday.
The hackers are believed to be acting on behalf of a foreign government, and also compromised organizations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The breach began as early as March and went unnoticed for months. SolarWinds' other customers include the US Treasury Department, the Department of Commerce, the Pentagon, the White House, and more than 425 of the Fortune 500 companies.
