Minister Calls for Prioritization of Medical Evacuations in Wake of Tragic Boating Accident in the BVI

The Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon.
Vincent Wheately, has called for the government to prioritize medical evacuations in the British Virgin Islands following the tragic death of Bakimba George, 28, of the Valley, Virgin Gorda, in a boating accident on Anegada.

Wheately stated that medical evacuations must be prioritized, particularly for remote areas such as Anegada, Virgin Gorda, and Jost Van Dyke.

The RVIPF Marine Branch is investigating the incident and initial investigations indicate that a 17-foot speedboat collided into the dock, resulting in injuries to both occupants.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development is currently conducting an assessment of the Primary Health Care System to strengthen and improve the delivery of health care in the Territory.

The Ministry has partnered with the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to assess the primary healthcare system in the BVI.
