Heavy rains drench BVI Sunday! Only slight chance of showers today

After being drenched with rainfall on Sunday, the British Virgin Islands is forecast to see much better weather conditions today, May 24.

Yesterday’s rains resulted in deteriorated road conditions that caused “several vehicles” to slide off the road, the police have reported.

The police said the territory also experienced flooding and minor rockslides from yesterday’s rains.

But according to a May 24 weather bulletin from the Department of Disaster Management, today’s conditions will be partly cloudy with a 20 percent or slight chance of showers.

Today’s winds are to be blowing 10 to 20 miles per hour east and gusting to 31 miles per hour.

First named storm for 2021 hurricane season

In the meantime, yesterday’s heavy rains came a day after the region saw the formation of Tropical Storm Ana — the first named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season.

Ana’s formation marks the seventh year in a row in which at least one named storm has formed prior to the start of Atlantic hurricane season which officially begins June 1.

As for the weather system’s status, it has since weakened and at 2 am today, the National Hurricane Center in the United States issued the last advisory on Anna (now a post-tropical cyclone).

It said Ana was located several hundred miles northeast of Bermuda; adding that tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next five days.
