HLSCC becomes a Fulbright host institution

HLSCC becomes a Fulbright host institution

In keeping with its strategic goal to promote excellence in teaching and learning, the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) has announced its membership in the Fulbright Awards Programme administered by the UK Fulbright Commission.

According to a press release from HLSCC, it is delighted to now offer the Fulbright’s new British Virgin Islands Scholar Award at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in the Fall of 2023 and is honoured by its inclusion on the list of prestigious Colleges and Universities to offer Fulbright Awards.

The award at HLSCC is for a professor based at an institution in the United States to spend six months at the Paraquita Bay campus. During this time, they will teach courses to HLSCC students and may conduct workshops, public lectures, seminars, and other activities related to their field of expertise. Applicants will be reviewed by the College in conjunction with the Fulbright Commission before a selection is made.

Exchange expected to benefit faculty- Dr Richard E. Georges

President of H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, Dr Richard E. Georges said that through the Fulbright – BVI Scholar Award, the College seeks to expand its international reach while offering opportunities to its students to learn from professors from institutions they may consider transferring to when they complete their associate degrees.

President Georges added, “We also expect this exchange to benefit our faculty, who will benefit from collegial exchange with visiting scholars as well as the opportunity to become visiting scholars themselves in the United States.”

Fulbright Scholar Programme

The Fulbright Scholar Programme awards more than 1,700 fellowships each year, enabling 800 US Scholars to go abroad and 900 Visiting Scholars to go the United States. As a Fulbright Scholar, academics and professionals make meaningful contributions to communities abroad and at home, in their chosen fields.

Fulbright is active in more than 160 countries and partners with participating governments, host institutions, corporations, and foundations in foreign countries and in the United States. Many of these organisations also provide direct and indirect support to scholars.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs sponsors the Fulbright Programme, and several non-profit cooperative partners implement and support the programme on its behalf. For more information on Fulbright and the BVI Scholar Award, visit fulbrightscholars.org.
