HMP inmate allegedly makes death threats to prison officers & families

Some officers at Her Majesty’s Prison in Balsam Ghut are said to be concerned for their safety as well as their families, following death threats made to them by at least one inmate.

According to reports, prisoners are said to be unhappy with a random search on June 2, 2021, that resulted in a number of their possessions, including cellphones, laptops and tablets, being seized.

The random search, which had reportedly targeted cells of hardened criminals and others on remand pending trial for murder, guns and drug crimes, had followed the stabbing to death of Nickail Chambers on May 30, 2021.

All in-person visitations to the prison were also suspended until further notice.

It is alleged that one of the inmates called the names of a number of prison officers with threats, indicating that he knows where the officers, their families and other loved ones live.

Police are said to be investigating the reports.

Nickail Chambers, 29, was fatally stabbed at Her Majesty's Prison on May 30, 2021.
